Artist Bio

Shane Armstrong is a photo-based artist from Washington, DC, USA.  Primarily self-taught in photography,  he continued his studies at the School of Photographic Art Ottawa (SPAO)  in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, receiving his diploma in 2024. His artwork engages with the basic principles of digital photography in the modern world; device screens are a motif in his art, primarily focusing on the individual pixels alongside his photographic subjects. He has participated in residencies at the Byrdcliffe Guild in Woodstock, New York, as well as Can Silvestre in Catalonia, Spain.

Artist Statement

I am a photo-based artist searching for the origins of confidence in the human experience. Through photography, I explore the depths and complexities of life, often carving through unfamiliar planes of existence and thought. I seek to find the things that empower humanity to achieve what was once considered impossible. Through social interaction and careful listening, I intend to create a world where dreams become intention, and therefore become action.

Exposure: Identity & the Evolving Image

Global Village Museum of Arts and Cultures, Fort Collins, CO, 2026

October 3, 2026-January 22, 2027

Prototype Image of “Ghost in the Machine”
Original photograph of “Ghost in the Machine” Produced at AiR Byrdcliffe Guild

Ghost in the Machine, Shane Armstrong, 2026

Ghost in the Machine is on view in Exposure: Identity & the Evolving Image at the Global Village Museum of Arts and Cultures in Fort Collins, Colorado, through January 22, 2027. The show asks how we see ourselves, and what it means to be seen.

The piece is a photograph of myself projected onto plexiglass using the Pepper’s ghost illusion, so the image floats with no background: an attempt to show the immaterial quality of a soul. A hand behind the image lets viewers interact with a figure that isn’t really there. It picks up where Hologram left off, turning that lens on myself.

6th LaGrange Southeast Regional

Lamar Dodd Art Center · LaGrange, GA · 2026

Labyrinth II
, Shane Armstrong, 2026

Labyrinth II was selected for the 6th LaGrange Southeast Regional Biennial, presented by the LaGrange Art Museum and the Lamar Dodd Art Center. This year’s show includes 129 works by 95 artists from 11 Southeastern states, chosen from more than 1,100 entries. It runs through January 16, 2027.

My photo-based work asks what happens when someone truly crosses the threshold into their own life. Their inner and outer experiences appear together in one image, in the hope that something new emerges from the combination.

I work by one rule: everything in a finished piece must come from a single photograph. No outside images, only what was in the original frame. It forces me to pay close attention when I’m shooting, and it has become a philosophy of making do with what I have.

Eutopia Artist Residency Application.
Some supporting information  to consider when reviewing my application
My project I am looking to create during my time with Eutopia is both through writing and photographic artwork. Over the last year, I have attended two artist residencies, one being at Can Silvestre in Catalonia, Spain, and another at the Byrdcliffe Guild AiR program in Woodstock, New York, USA. The theme of both projects I worked on while in attendance was one of unlocking the origins of human confidence.

While at Can Silvestre, I worked on the project “Prometheus in the Dark,” following the myth of Prometheus from the stories told from your country in ancient times. Prometheus in this story was an ungendered human being in current history. They made the ascent from the mess of humanity’s unguided confusions about life to the peak of Mount Olympus, seeking a massive change in their life: one of belief in themself, where they found others could not.

The story led Prometheus to the gates, where they faced an unavoidable reluctance and an eventual acceptance of entry. The fire, which was not a fire but something unfathomable, spoke in many voices of differing emotions and differing severity. They were all something that could be felt but not described at the time. This fire enveloped their body and coupled with their soul.

Upon their exit and descent down the mountain at night is where the bulk of this story took place. A new way of existing had just been bestowed upon them, and they had to make sense of it. What is the fire? What was stopping me from entering? Who was it that was speaking to me? The description of the visions that were placed upon Prometheus’s mind and many more questions were to be answered on this long walk down the mountain.

This story during this residency resonated most with the soul.

Then comes my second residency at Byrdcliffe. This was a continuation of the story, but now with other people. During my time at Can Silvestre, there were two other people at the residency, the host and another artist, which made it a quiet, mostly solitary experience. Byrdcliffe was the opposite: there were nearly 25 other artists sharing the space together, which helped with the next leg of the journey, the mind. The origins of confidence come from how you were raised and the environment that you have around you. This can be observed by interacting with other people; by observing how people act in their daily lives, you can see how they feel about themselves. The easiest tell is how they speak about themselves. I spent the majority of the time with the other artists. We would work alongside each other, painting, doing photography, writing, or doing things unrelated to art, like helping each other with car troubles, going to the grocery store, or even taking trips to the local riverside to cool off from the summer heat. The connection formed through this was immensely helpful in understanding Prometheus’s next moves as they interact with other people outside of their cellphone.

This section was heavily focused on the mind.

The synthesis of the information from the gods and from humanity is where I would like to continue the story at Eutopia. Now has come the time for Prometheus to embody the things they have learned, not within a silent, unspoken world, but a present, capable world where they can reach out and touch what it is that they want to be.

This story has not been fully written, and that is what I would like to do at Eutopia. I feel that coincidentally writing it in Greece, with the real Mount Olympus being only a bus or train ride away, is a funny little bit of fate, urging me to embody myself and see if I can reach that.

If you are able to provide for that, I would be absolutely eager to participate.

Thank you so much,

Shane Armstrong
